Cate Blanchett, Zendaya Among 2017 InStyle Awards Honorees

Hello everyone!

Some exciting news!

The third annual awards ceremony will be held Oct. 23 at the Getty Center in Los Angeles.

This year’s InStyle Awards will feature a star-studded lineup of honorees yet again.

Hosted by InStyle editor Laura Brown, the third annual awards ceremony will honor style icon Cate Blanchett, style star Zendaya, breakthrough style star Elle Fanning, stylist of the year Petra Flannery, designer of the year Pierpaolo Piccioli, advocate award winner Demi Lovato, makeup artist of the year Hung Vanngo and hairstylist of the year Harry Josh.

Brown shares that Blanchett is the perfect candidate for the style icon award “because she’s always resolutely herself, fearless and experimental. And we don’t use the word ‘icon’ lightly.”

Meanwhile, “Zendaya is the most electric new talent we have witnessed in years with her her eclectic, fuss-free street style and her daring red carpet choices. Her collaboration with Law Roach is truly inspiring.”

“We are extraordinarily proud of the reception our event has received among our friends in the entertainment and fashion communities, yourself included,” says Brown of the annual InStyle Awards. “When we created the event three years ago we wanted to make it the most elegant tribute imaginable to our heroes of the red carpet, to honor their hard work in creating moments that inspire us all.”

The evening will also honor Valentino creative director Piccioli, who Brown says is “a dear friend of InStyle and his extraordinary work for Valentino has been worn by virtually every A-list actress in Hollywood today. He is the true heir to the throne of Valentino.”

Flannery, who was named the No. 1 most powerful stylist in 2015 by The Hollywood Reporter, will receive the stylist of the year award for “having such a moment with Emma Stone this year that we couldn’t have considered anyone else,” says Brown.

Held at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, this year’s intimate event will follow the same format as in years past, but with an earlier start time “so our guests have the chance to enjoy the sunset at such a magnificent space,” according to Brown. Last year’s celebration honored Nicole Kidman, Priyanka Chopra, Shailene Woodley, Tom Ford and more.

Don’t worry if you can’t make the private soiree — just follow the #InStyleAwards hashtag on social media to keep up with what’s happening Oct. 23.

“Personally I’m proud that at such a chic incredible event there is a real sense of friendship and sincerity,” says Brown, who’s been at the helm of InStyle since 2016. “It’s just a really good hang.”

Cate Blanchett joins the jury of The Hope Prize in its second year

Hey everyone!

Cate is back to judge the Brotherhood of St Laurence’s literary award. The Hope Prize, short story competition, is open for entries until January 31, 2018. Read more below.

BROTHERHOOD’S $10,000 HOPE PRIZE FOR WRITING RISES AGAIN

Cate Blanchett has joined a stellar cast of judges for a new round of the Hope Prize awarded to a short story exploring resilience amid poverty in Australia.

The writing competition is run by the national welfare group Brotherhood of St Laurence to challenge common stereotypes of what it means to be poor and disadvantaged in an otherwise prosperous country.

The Brotherhood has also signed up author Kate Grenville and former Governor General Quentin Bryce as judges. It will be a sequel for the trio who first came together to judge the inaugural Hope Prize for the welfare group in 2016.

Farah Farouque, from the Brotherhood, said using the medium of short stories, which could be based on fact or fiction, had proved to be a great way to reach new audiences.

”When we ran the competition for the first time we were overwhelmed by close to 1000 entries and the winning short stories were published in an anthology appropriately called ‘Hope’.”

“Through the Hope Prize we want to find evocative new voices and champions to explore social issues that deserve more focus.”

The competition is supported by philanthropy and the winning story story will be awarded $10,000.

In addition, two Women’s Writing Career Development Scholarships, valued at $5,000 each, will also be awarded.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 wins the Golden Globe

Quebec-born director Dean DeBlois didn’t expect to hear, “How To Train Your Dragon 2” when the envelope was finally opened for the best animated feature category at the 72nd Annual Golden Globes on Sunday night.

“I was genuinely shocked when I heard those words, and it was a real high,” said DeBlois, on the phone from Los Angeles Monday morning.

“Every award pundit had TheLEGO Movie winning.”

The film also features the vocal talents of Gerard Butler, America Ferrera and Cate Blanchett.

With Cate Blanchett, this was her first time [doing animation], and she’s methodical about wanting to know every aspect of what the character is thinking, so it really became a discussion every time,” said DeBlois.

DeBlois is already hard at work on How to Train Your Dragon 3, which he says should be out in June of 2017.

Cate Blanchett wins fourth Helpmann Award

CATE Blanchett has triumphed again, taking home her fourth Helpmann Award for best actress in a play, it was announced at a lavish ceremony in Sydney tonight.

The star of stage and screen won the prestigious prize for her leading role in the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of The Maids. She has previously won best actress awards for three other STC shows: Gross Und Klein (2012), Uncle Vanya (2011) and Hedda Gabler (2005).

Blanchett’s award was one of 44 presented at the Capitol Theatre during a star-studded night of entertainment recognising Australia’s best live performance.

Opera Australia was the most awarded company with nine awards, of which six were for last year’s epic Melbourne Ring Cycle and three were for its co-production with John Frost, The King and I, which was named best musical.

Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin were overlooked for best director and best costume designer gongs respectively for Strictly Ballroom, which was nominated for six awards but picked up only one.

Instead, Dean Bryant was named best director of a musical for Sweet Charity and Roger Kirk won the award for best costume designer for The King and I.

It was a glorious night for the creators of Sweet Charity, new outfit Hayes Theatre Co, which also picked up awards for best female actor in a musical (Verity Hunt-Ballard) and best choreographer (Andrew Hallsworth).

Other highlights include Richard Roxburgh winning best male actor in a play for Waiting for Godot (Sydney Theatre Company), and Craig McLachlan winning best male actor in a musical for Rocky Horror Show.

Sam Simmons won the award for best comedian, Sarah Ward won best cabaret performer, Bruce Springsteen was named best international concert, and Hunters and Collectors won best Australian concert.

Best play went to Angels in America (Sydney’s Belvoir St Theatre), best opera was Melbourne Ring Cycle (Opera Australia), and best ballet or dance work was Chroma (The Australian Ballet).

The 14th annual awards, presented by Live Performance Australia, have grown in stature every year and are fiercely contested among performers and producers.

“There’s no question they are the pinnacle awards for live performance in this country and we know because people get really upset every year when they’re not nominated,” LPA chief executive Evelyn Richardson said.

“It’s very competitive and people really value their Helpmanns highly. Like all awards shows you court controversy and we live with that, just like the Tonys and the Oliviers do, but I think the main test is the number of entries that we have and the number of producers and performers who really want to be on that list.”
