Cate Blanchett to Officially Star in Eli Roth’s ‘Borderlands’

Hey blanchetters!

This is not a drill!
Lionsgate officially confirmed that Cate Blanchett has been cast to play Lilith in the video game based movie “Borderlands”.

Cate Blanchett has officially closed a deal to star in director Eli Roth’s movie adaptation of the video game “Borderlands” at Lionsgate.

Blanchett will portray Lilith, a legendary thief equipped with magical skills. Lionsgate announced the deal on Thursday, a month after Variety first reported the attachment.

The project reunites Blanchett with Roth, who collaborated on “The House With a Clock in Its Walls.”

Blanchett currently stars in “Mrs. America,” which she also executive produces, and will star in James Gray’s upcoming “Armageddon Time” and Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up.” She’s won Academy Awards for her performances in “The Aviator” and “Blue Jasmine,” and was nominated for “Elizabeth,” “Elizabeth: The Golden Age,” “Notes on a Scandal” and “I’m Not There.”

Roth said, “I’m so lucky to have the amazing Cate Blanchett starring in ‘Borderlands.’ We had the most incredible collaboration together on ‘The House With a Clock in Its Walls,’ and I believe there’s nothing she can’t do. From drama to comedy and now action, Cate makes every scene sing. Working with her is truly a director’s dream come true, and I feel so fortunate that I get to do it again on an even bigger scale. Everyone brings their A-game to work with Cate, and I know together we’re going to create another iconic character in her already storied career.”

“Borderlands,” launched in 2009, is a role-playing first-person shooter game created and developed by Gearbox Software and published by Take-Two Interactive Software’s 2K label. The game is set on the planet of Pandora, which has been abandoned by a mega-corporation prior to the game events. The series has sold more than 57 million units worldwide. The most recent installment, “Borderlands 3,” was released last September.

“Borderlands” will be produced by Avi and Ari Arad, who produce through their Arad Productions banner, and Erik Feig, through Picturestart, who have shepherded the project and overseen development, including the latest draft of the screenplay by Emmy-winning screenwriter Craig Mazin. The film’s executive producers are Randy Pitchford, executive producer of the “Borderlands” video game franchise and founder of Gearbox Entertainment Company, and Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two Interactive.

Blanchett is represented by CAA. Robert Melnik negotiated the deal on behalf of Lionsgate. James Myers and Aaron Edmonds are overseeing the project for Lionsgate. Emmy Yu is overseeing the film for Arad Productions. Lucy Kitada will oversee the movie for Picturestart.

Cate Blanchett news: a compilation

Hi everybody!

We have compiled 7 recent news about Cate Blanchett. Take a look!

No To A Return To Normal: the petition signed by Cate Blanchett, De Niro & Many More

A group of over 200 high-profile artists and scientists from around the world has signed an editorial in French newspaper Le Monde, calling on world leaders and citizens “to undertake a profound overhaul of our goals, values, and economies,” in the wake of the coronavirus crisis, “if we want to avoid ecological disaster.”

Signatories include Juliette Binoche, Cate Blanchett, Robert De Niro, Joaquin Phoenix, Alfonso Cuaron, Barbra Streisand, Madonna and Marion Cotillard.

Titled, “Non à un retour à la normale” (No To A Return To Normal) the call to arms was penned by Oscar winner Binoche and astrophysicist Aurélien Barrau. They write that the COVID-19 tragedy is “inviting us to examine what is essential. And what we see is simple: ‘adjustments’ are not enough. The problem is systemic.”

Here’s the text in full: Read it in French here.

The Covid-19 pandemic is a tragedy. This crisis is, however, inviting us to examine what is essential. And what we see is simple: “adjustments” are not enough. The problem is systemic.

The ongoing ecological catastrophe is a meta-crisis: the massive extinction of life on Earth is no longer in doubt, and all indicators point to a direct existential threat. Unlike a pandemic, however severe, a global ecological collapse will have immeasurable consequences.

We therefore solemnly call upon leaders — and all of us as citizens – to leave behind the unsustainable logic that still prevails and to undertake a profound overhaul of our goals, values, and economies.

The pursuit of consumerism and an obsession with productivity have led us to deny the value of life itself: that of plants, that of animals, and that of a great number of human beings. Pollution, climate change, and the destruction of our remaining natural zones has brought the world to a breaking point.

For these reasons, along with increasing social inequalities, we believe it is unthinkable to “go back to normal.”

The radical transformation we need – at all levels – demands boldness and courage. It will not happen without a massive and determined commitment. We must act now. It is as much a matter of survival as one of dignity and coherence.

Cate Blanchett to guest star in ‘The Simpsons’

Cate Blanchett reportedly has lended her voice to a canine psychologiest, called Elaine, for The Simpsons season 31 finale episode “The Way of the Dog”. Her character will help Santa’s Little Helper, the Simpson’s family dog, from his depression.

Simpsons executive producer Al Jean told EW:

Elaine determines if there’s a trauma in his past that they have to go solve, which actually goes back to the first episode of the series.

She sleeps in the same room with him when she brings him in for treatment. She’s very loving. But with people she’s a lot more brusque.

Al Jean adds of Blanchett: “As expected, she was fantastic. We’re proud to say that we got a two-time Oscar winner to talk in dog gibberish, but it really sounded like Elvish to me.”

Cate Blanchett in podcast WTF with Mark Maron

Conventional wisdom holds that Cate Blanchett is one of the world’s greatest living performers, but one person who disagrees with that is Cate Blanchett, who thinks she’s pretty terrible most of the time (her words, not ours). Marc and Cate try to get to the bottom of why she’s so hard on herself despite her many career accomplishments. They discuss The Lord of the Rings, playing Bob Dylan, why her hair fell out when she played Blanche DuBois, why Al Pacino is her hero, and why she took on the story of Phyllis Schlafly in Mrs. America. Cate Blanchett in talks to star as Lilith in Borderlands film adaptation at Lionsgate

Hey guys!

Variety has reported that Cate Blanchett is in talks to star as Lilith in Borderlands film adaptation at Lionsgate.

Borderlands is a successful video game franchise launched in 2009. The role-playing first-person shooter game includes the following installments:

  • Borderlands,
  • Borderlands 2,
  • Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel,
  • Tales from the Borderlands,
  • and Borderlands 3.

The main setting is a futuristic sci-fi universe, a planet Pandora, where characters have fight against mega-corporations.

Directing this movie adaptation is Eli Roth (The House with a clock in its Walls). Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) wrote the latest screenplay draft.  Then, Avi and Ari Arad along with Erik Feig will be producing it.

Cate for the lead role in Borderlands?

According to Lilith’s character profile in wiki, she is one the four playable characters in the original Borderlands game. In the Pandora’s universe, Lilith is one of six Sirens from the planet Dionysus. This group of women have unbelievable powers.

Lilith’s action skill is the Phasewalk, which lets her turn invisible to enemies (but not to her teammates, to whom she appears as translucent blue). She can move much faster and cause a damaging shockwave (Phase Blast) upon entering and exiting.

When fighting in Arena Battles Phasewalk will make Lilith invisible to opposing players, but all Sirens in Phasewalk can see each other, regardless of teams (as they are all in the same dimension). Spark does not work in Arena either however it does function in duels.

Gearbox Software co-founder Randy Pitchford describes it as, “kind of like when Frodo puts on the ring, except that when she takes it off she can kill everything around her with a shock wave nova effect”. This effect can be altered by using unique artifacts that can add elemental damage to the Phase Blast.

Previous rumors on this adaptation suggested a female protagonist that could be Lilith. Nevertheless, there are no official details at this point because the production is in early days. However, after playing the remarkable MCU villain Hela in Thor Ragnarok, we can expect great things from Cate in a superhero movie.

The cast of Mrs. America on the cover of Emmy Magazine + recent magazines scans

Hello Blanchetters!

The cast of Mrs. America graces the cover of newest issue of Emmy Magazine. The photoshoot, by Robert Ashcroft, dates back to the Winter TCA Tour, as it does the video interview from the set.

From the magazine contents – Full interview here

Right Minded
Cate Blanchett leads a stellar cast in Mrs. America, a look back at the feminist leaders of the ‘70s, their political foes and the fight over the Equal Rights Amendment.

By now, the Equal Rights Amendment was supposed to be history, not news.

The proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution was intended to guarantee equal legal rights for all Americans, regardless of sex. Approved by the House of Representatives in 1971 and by the Senate the following year, it needed to be ratified by 38 states by 1979.

But before that could happen, Phyllis Schlafly stepped in. The story of how the conservative activist defeated the ERA (which has since been revived — and still awaits ratification) is a large part of the story of Mrs. America, the FX on Hulu limited series now streaming on FX on Hulu.

A deep dive into the second wave of feminism (suffragettes were the first), the series challenges assumptions across the political spectrum.

To some, Schlafly (Cate Blanchett) was the enemy, fighting the ERA and other feminist causes. To others, she was a hero: a wife and mother of six whose Eagle Forum promoted traditional values.

From the opening scene — in which Blanchett models an American-flag bikini at a 1971 political fundraiser — viewers may reconsider their opinions of both the woman and the era.

Over nine episodes, the series adds shades of gray to what had been monochromatic views of this history.

“None of us were interested in a piece of advocacy entertainment,” Blanchett says in a Los Angeles studio, where Mrs. America’s principal cast members and producers gathered for their emmy photos. They shared an easy rapport, borne of their five-month shoot in Toronto.

Dahvi Waller, the series’ creator, showrunner, writer and executive producer, recalls early talks with fellow executive producer Stacey Sher, who was determined to present the story “in a nonconfrontational way.” “We have to start talking to each other as humans,” Waller says.

“There is a lot of doctrinaire, binary thinking on both sides,” adds Blanchett, who also served as an executive producer. “These are extremely messy, smart, hilarious women. And we see them from different perspectives. It is interesting to see the contradictions within them.”

Scans will be added as soon as we have them.

As we reported in our last post Cate was on the cover of Sunday Life magazine. We are still looking for the scans, please mail us if you have them.

In the meantime enjoy the most recent magazines scans added to the gallery, featuring interviews promoting Stateless and Mrs. America. Enjoy!
